Jericho Nursery | Red Valerian

Red Valerian (Centranthus ruber), also known as Jupiter’s Beard, is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in Albuquerque’s arid climate, alkaline soils, and USDA Zone 7b. Native to the Mediterranean, this bushy plant grows 1.5–3 feet tall with blue-green, lance-shaped foliage and produces abundant clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers in vibrant red, pink, or white.

In Albuquerque, it blooms prolifically from late spring through fall, often until first frost, making it ideal for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and pollinator habitats. It attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while reseeding readily in sunny, well-drained spots.

Low-maintenance and resilient to poor soils, intense heat, and low water, Red Valerian adds long-lasting color to Albuquerque landscapes, though deadheading helps control its spread.
